The Role of Teaching in Modern LibrariesSoaring to Excellence
Steven J. Bell Steven is Director of the Paul J. Gutman Library at Philadelphia University. Prior to that, he was the Assistant Director of the Lippincott Library of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He obtained his Doctorate in Education in 1997 from the University of Pennsylvania, and his Master of Science in Library Science from Drexel University in 1977. He writes and speaks frequently on topics such as keeping up with personal and professional development, library technology, and academic librarianship. An Adjunct Professor at the Drexel University College of Information Science and Technology, Steven teaches courses in online searching, academic librarianship, and business information resources. His latest articles include “The Blended Librarian: A Blueprint for Redefining the Teaching and Learning Role of Academic Librarians” (co-authored with John Shank), published in College & Research Libraries News 65(7):372-375, July/August 2004; and “End PowerPoint Dependency Now!” published in American Libraries 35 (6): 56-59, June/July, 2004.
John D. Shank John received his Masters from Drexel's School of Library and Information Science. Since entering the field in 1996 he has worked in various capacities at several academic institutions, including: Montgomery County Community College, Haverford College, and Bryn Mawr College. Currently, he is the Instructional Design Librarian and newly appointed director of the Center for Learning Technologies for Pennsylvania State University’s, Berks-Lehigh Valley College. He has assisted over 80 full- and part-time Penn State faculty and librarians in adopting ANGEL courseware in their instruction. John has presented numerous faculty development workshops at various universities and colleges, given presentations at regional and national conferences, and has been an invited speaker about and co-authored articles on the topic of integrating library services into courseware.
David Reifsnyder David appears to be either a renaissance man or a dilettante. He has worked professionally as a photographer, geriatric care provider, ski instructor, marketing director, corporate relations manager, graphic arts and website designer, theatrical actor and director, theatre librarian, scriptwriter, voiceover talent and teacher. After completing his Doctoral studies in Theatre at the University of Colorado (Boulder), David became deeply involved with the commercial development of the Internet; between 1994 and 1999 he built and directed one of the most successful web design companies in Colorado. For the past five years, David has been teaching both theatre- and New Media-related classes at Wheaton College. In 2001 he led the all-faculty seminar on teaching and technology. That same year he developed and taught Digital Society, a class devoted to the exploration of the interaction between emerging digital media and contemporary society. David currently divides his time between consulting, design and theatre.
Anne M. Kozak Anne has been the Director of the Thomas Ford Memorial Library in Western Springs, Illinois since 1986. Her background is in public libraries, having worked in children's services, reference, and readers' advisory. She received her bachelor's degree from Northwestern University in 1971 and her M.L.S. degree from Rosary College in 1977. Anne is a member of the Illinois Library Association and the American Library Association.
Linda Slusar Linda is the cofounder of the Soaring to Excellence Teleconferences. She is also the coordinator of the Library Technical Assistants program at College of DuPage and a full-time professor in the program. In addition to course planning and development for the LTA Program, Linda also advises LTA students, and has expanded the college’s course offerings to include internet courses, two-way video courses, satellite teleconferences, and “blended classrooms.” Linda was voted the winner of Library Mosaics' "Supporter of Support Staff" award for the year 2000, and is devoted to providing educational opportunities for library staff.
