The Female Reproductive System Tutorial

 

Unit 1: Growth and Development of the Female Reproductive System

This unit provides a brief overview of fetal development of the female reproductive system. It then addresses changes that occur in puberty including a discussion of the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad complex and its role in puberty. It concludes with a discussion of the climacteric including: physiology of the climacteric, signs and symptoms of the climacteric, common physiological changes of the climacteric, and educating the client during the climacteric. It includes a discussion of osteoporosis.

 

Unit 2: External Structures of the Female Reproductive System

Unit 2 discusses the external structures and the function of these structures. Example pathologies include Bartholin cyst, cancer of the vulva, and vulvitis.

 

Unit 3: Internal Structures of the Female Reproductive System

The function, structure, and physical assessment of the internal organs discussed in Unit 3 include the:

  • ovaries and their hormones
  • fallopian tubes
  • uterus
  • cervix
  • vagina
  • pelvis 

A discussion of pelvic relaxation is also included. Example pathologies include ovarian cancer, functional ovarian cysts, ectopic tubal pregnancy, salpingitis, endometriosis, leiomyomas, uterine cancer, cervical cancer, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, human papillomavirus, Chlamydia trachomatis, toxic shock syndrome, vaginal cancer, cystocele, rectocele, and uterine prolapse.

 

Unit 4: Menstrual Cycle

Unit 4 covers the phases of the menstrual cycle. Dysfunctional uterine bleeding and premenstrual syndrome are examples of common pathologies of the menstrual cycle.

 

Unit 5: Breasts

This unit covers the structures of the breasts. Clinical breast examination and breast self-examination are explained. Common pathologies include cancer of the breast and benign breast disease.

 

Unit 6: Self Test

This unit consists of a test bank of 20 items. The test bank questions were designed to address all levels of difficulty. Knowledge and comprehension questions are used to ensure the student has mastered the necessary foundation. Application and analysis questions are used to test the student's ability to apply the information to client situations.
