Expanded TopicsThe Immune System Tutorial
Unit 1: Definition of the Immune SystemThis unit provides a definition of the immune system and an explanation of the concept, self versus non-self. The following autoimmune disorders and their related nursing interventions are covered:
Unit 2: Functions of the Immune SystemUnit 2 covers the three main functions of the immune system: defense, homeostasis, and surveillance.
Unit 3: The Parts of the Immune System: The Three Lines of DefenseThis unit covers the three lines of defense. Video clips and animation are used throughout this section for a comprehensive view of the role each of these lines plays. The unit is organized as follows: First Line of Defense: includes the general lines of defense, which are the body’s epithelial surfaces of the skin and body openings. Second Line of Defense: covers the antimicrobial proteins such as complement and interferon as well as the inflammatory response. Third Line of Defense: The B and T lymphocytes. Video clips and animation are used to demonstrate many of the concepts throughout the unit.
Unit 4: Factors Affecting Immune EfficiencyThe last tutorial unit covers factors that can affect the efficiency of a person’s immune system. The following four factors are considered in this section: aging, exercise, nutrition, and stress.
Unit 5: Self TestThis unit consists of a test bank of 25 items. The test bank questions were designed to address all levels of difficulty. Knowledge and comprehension questions are used to ensure the student has mastered the necessary foundation. Application and analysis questions are used to test the student's ability to apply the information to patient situations. Immediately after answering a question, the student is given the rationale for both correct and incorrect answers. This feedback is helpful in correcting any misunderstandings the student may have. After taking the test, the student may print out the results. Feedback containing the questions answered incorrectly along with rationales is provided. The questions contained in the self test are included in hard copy in Chapter 6 of this manual. You may use these questions when preparing your own classroom tests. Because this is a "self test", students may exit the test bank at any time.
