Musculoskeletal System Tutorial

Unit 1: Introduction to the Musculoskeletal System

This unit covers general information about the musculoskeletal system. It discusses the functions of the system and provides a general overview of the two major components, the skeletal system and the muscular system.

Unit 2: Structures and Physiology of the Musculoskeletal System

This unit is broken into four sections:

  1. Functions and Structures of Bones
  2. Functions and Structures of Skeletal Muscles
  3. Functions and Structures of Joints
  4. Functions and Structures of Support Tissues: tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and bursae

Section 1: Functions and Structures of the Bones

This section discusses the functions and structures of bones, types of bones, anatomy of bones, types of bone cells, bone remodeling, and bone healing. It includes video clips that cover pathologies such as multiple myeloma, fat embolism syndrome, osteomyelitis, Paget's disease, osteoporosis, fractures, and the effects of immobility on the bones. Both medical and nursing interventions are included.

Section 2: Functions and Structures of Skeletal Muscles

This section discusses the functions and structures of muscles, anatomy of muscles, and physiology of muscle contraction. It includes video clips that cover pathologies such as compartment syndrome, muscle fatigue, myasthenia gravis, and the effect of immobility on the muscles. Both medical and nursing interventions are included.

Section 3: Functions and Structures of Joints

This section discusses the types and functions of joints, the joint capsule, and types of joint movements. It includes video clips that cover pathologies such as osteoarthritis and rotator cuff injury. Both medical and nursing interventions are included. Video clips are used to demonstrate assessment techniques.

Section 4: Functions and Structures of Support - Tissues: tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and bursae

This section discusses the functions and structures of tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and bursae.  It includes video clips that cover pathologies such as tendonitis, anterior cruciate ligament injuries, torn meniscus, and bursitis. Both medical and nursing interventions are included. Video clips are used to demonstrate assessment techniques.

Unit 3: Effects of Aging on the Musculoskeletal System

This unit covers changes in the musculoskeletal system that occur with aging. Changes as they relate to the bones, muscles, and joints are covered. Problems that occur due to these changes are listed. Falls is used as the clinical application for this unit.

Unit 4: Test Bank for Self Test

This unit consists of a test bank covering all the information presented in the program:

  1. Functions and Structures of Bones
  2. Functions and Structures of Skeletal Muscles
  3. Functions and Structures of Joints
  4. Functions and Structures of Support Tissues
  5. The Effects of Aging on the Musculoskeletal System
