Unit 1: Preconception Care

This unit provides information about the importance of preconception care. Although pregnancy begins with conception, the groundwork for a healthy pregnancy is laid well before conceptions occurs. It also covers the evaluation of women for risk factors by addressing

  • Family history
  • Medical history
  • Personal history
  • Physical examination
  • Psychosocial assessment

Unit 2: Overview of Pregnancy

To understand the assessment and nursing care of the pregnant client, it is important to look at the physiologic changes and related discomforts that occur as a result of pregnancy. This unit covers the  physiologic changes that occur in the mother and the discomforts of pregnancy.

Unit 3: Psychological Changes in the Family

A pregnancy affects all members of the family. Everyone must adapt to the pregnancy in a way that meets their individual needs. Family members can help one another work through various feelings and concerns. Stress is a guaranteed aspect of pregnancy even when the pregnancy was planned and desired. This section covers the psychological changes that may occur in the mother, father, siblings and grandparents.

Unit 4: Overview of Fetal Growth and Development

This unit is divided into sections on

  • Each of the three trimesters
  • Placental support and fetal circulation
  • The various tests that indicate fetal well-being and maturity

Unit 5: Prenatal Care

This unit discusses the importance of prenatal care and how it is planned for the individual client based on assessment of risks identified prior to and during pregnancy. Health promotion, education, and healthcare interventions focus on providing preventative care. It is divided into content that addresses

  • Diagnosing pregnancy
  • Care during each of the trimesters
  • Specific assessments during prenatal visits

Unit 6: Client Teaching

Client teaching is emphasized throughout the program. However, specific content not covered elsewhere in the program is covered in Unit 6. The content is arranged by trimester.

Unit 7: Self Test

This unit consists of a test bank of 15 items.  The test bank questions were designed to address all levels of difficulty.

Knowledge and comprehension questions are used to ensure the student has mastered the necessary foundation.

Application and analysis questions are used to test the student’s ability to apply the information to client situations.

Immediately after answering a question, the student is given feedback.  This feedback is helpful in correcting any misunderstandings the student may have.

After taking the test, the student may print out the results.  Feedback relative to the correct answer is provided. The questions contained in the self test are included in the manual.  You may use these questions when preparing your  own classroom tests.
