Unit 1: Physical Changes in the Postpartum Period

This  unit provides learning about the changes that occur in the client’s body during the postpartum period. Topics covered include the abdomen, breast, circulatory system, endocrine system, gastrointestinal system, reproductive system and urinary system. Related complications are covered in each section.

 

Unit 2: The Client Who Experienced a Caesarean Birth

This unit covers care of the client experiencing a cesarean birth. It discusses the care of the mother following a cesarean birth incorporating both postoperative and postpartum care. Specific body systems targeted include the circulatory system, gastrointestinal system, and respiratory system.  Other topics covered include

  • Uterine tone
  • Wound assessment
  • Pain management
  • Family adaptation

Unit 3: Changes in Family Adaptation

This unit discusses the attachment process and covers information to help the nurse teach new parents about family adaptation. The topics include

  • Parent adaptation
  • Baby adaptation
  • Breastfeeding and bottle feeding

Unit 4: Psychological Adjustment in the Postpartum Period

This unit discusses the nurse’s role in assessing the mother’s psychological adjustment during the postpartum period noting the mother’s general attitude, feelings of competency, support systems, and ability to provide care to the newborn. The disorders covered in this unit include

  • Postpartum blues
  • Postpartum depression
  • Postpartum psychosis

Unit 5: Home Visit

This unit discusses the importance of follow-up care during the early postpartum period. Included is information about conducting a home visit and typical problems the nurse might anticipate identifying during the visit.

 

Unit 6: General Teaching Principles

This unit emphasizes the importance of teaching the postpartum client and family. It provides guidelines related to content and teaching principles.

 

Unit 7: Self Test

This unit consists of a test bank of 15 items. The test bank questions were designed to address all levels of difficulty. Knowledge and comprehension questions are used to ensure the student has mastered the necessary foundation. Application and analysis questions are used to test the student’s ability to apply the information to client situations.
